How often do people tell you how wonderful you are
and how much you mean to them?
I’m guessing not enough.
Even those who love you probably could tell you more
often how much you mean to them.
Why is it that we often wait until it’s too late or after
someone is gone to say how we feel and how much
he or she means to us?
So I got to thinking about what my birthday means and
why is it special. It’s day to celebrate, a day I don’t
feel selfish or guilty about being acknowledged.
Growing up the youngest of eight I shunned attention.
I felt it separated me from my brothers and sisters.
It was important for me to be included. Being part of
the team was a prime directive of this youngest child.
Although I was independent and marched to the beat of
my own drummer, I wanted to be part of the team.
In the pecking order the youngest was seen, not heard.
I had nothing to say until everyone else was done. Even
then I didn’t know if what I thought or said mattered.
How would your birthday be different if the dozens of
friends who wished you “Happy Birthday” on Facebook
expressed how they feel and what you mean to them?
What if your birthday was a total celebration of you?
Imagine reading over and over again the wonderful
sentiments and meaning you infuse into people’s lives?
What if celebrating your life became a daily ritual?
My guess is it would transform you and everyone who
played the game of life with you.
So I have a birthday gift for you and request from you.

If you’re inclined, feel free to say a little something
about what I mean to you. I’m not fishing for compliments.
Express what’s in your heart.

I encourage you to make the same request on your birthday.
Wouldn’t it be great to know what you mean to people?
How amazing would it be to read how valuable, precious and

Marc We Miss You Comments Off on Marc We Miss You
I’m remembering my lifelong friend Marc Rosberger affectionately the “Moped” who left us far too early and way too abruptly 8 years ago today.
Marc always encouraged me to “finish” to “take my shot” instead of passing the ball. Marc, you’d be proud of me: I’m finishing! You may not be here but you’re ever present.
I know i speak for all “da boys” when I say I love you and miss the crap out of you.
Here’s my eulogy to Marc 8 years ago:
For Marc
After Lynn’s (Marc’s sister) funeral service, Marc was devastated. He was most upset because a total stranger was trying to speak about his beloved sister, who next to Molly, was the person he loved more than anyone in the world.
He said to me, “Promise that doesn’t happen. I don’t want a stranger who doesn’t know me talking some BS.”
That was vintage Marc. Of course, I said yes, never thinking I’d have to keep that promise.
With a broken heart and unspeakable grief, I stand here to fulfill a promise I never believed I’d have to keep. Today would have been my oldest brother’s 70th birthday. We lost him seven years ago. It was the worst loss of my life. Today, I feel that way again. Marc is more than a friend; he’s a brother.
It’s said that, “The bond that links your true family is not one of blood, but of respect and joy in each other’s life.”
This room is filled today because Marc is family to each and every one of us.
To fulfill my promise and to honor Marc, I share this short poem:
In 1968 on the corner of Manor and Mill,
Two baby-faced teens met in the cold winter chill;
We delivered the newspapers in Stuyvesant Village,
The same place after school we would plunder and pillage.
I was the son of Mr. A, the man the kids loved to hate,
But to Marc, it didn’t matter our friendship was fate;
We had so much in common, we hit it off from the start;
Two middle class Jewish kids who never would part;
First there was George’s where we all cut our teeth,
We learned to make tuna, and slice the corned beef;
Then came Marc’s Luncheonette,
Where a parade of family and friends came and went;
At Marc’s it was home, the conversation funny,
You could eat as much as you wanted, even if you didn’t have any money.
Who could forget the houses in Millburn and Montclair,
Where you would always hear laughter, and smell funny smoke in the air.
And every Sunday morning in the rain or the heat,
The Dubres took the field; we were a tough bunch to beat.
Marc was clutch he got so many big hits,
At the plate he would give the opposing pitchers fits,
He was an ace on the mound, he always stood tall,
I can still hear his voice, “Mitchell, keep your eye on the ball.”
I’ll always remember 1976,
When I snuck through his bedroom window with game 7 tickets,
To the ALCS between the Royals and Yanks,
And every year in October, he’d call to say, THANKS!
He could be cantankerous, and stubborn at times,
Then he’d reach in his pocket and give you his last dime.
He lived life to the fullest each and every day,
And he didn’t hesitate to go out of his way,
Even if his clothes were torn and tattered,
He always gave what he had to the people who mattered.
He had a big heart, and did good for others,
And although none of blood, he had dozens of brothers.
We celebrated new years and our children that came,
And Marc gets my vote for the Dad’s Hall of Fame.
We shared so much over 35 years,
Happiness, sadness, laughter and tears.
With pain in our hearts and grief unspoken,
The loss of you Marc means our chain is now broken.
You were taken too soon, we had so much more to share
It’s a hard thing to accept, but life isn’t fair.
You loved your family and you loved your friends,
And that’s why your memory will never end.
Of everyone he loved, Molly he loved you the most.
You’re the apple of his eye; you buttered his toast.
He was so proud of you, Molly he loved you so much.
When you need strength and guidance, he’ll be in touch.
If you need someone to talk to, his voice will be near,
Just close your eyes and listen, he’ll whisper in your ear.
Today we face life’s greatest test, as we lay our dear brother to rest.
We say goodbye to our friend, there will never be another.
We love you, Marc Rosberger.
God Bless YOU, my brother.
What’s Your Emotional Capital Worth? Comments Off on What’s Your Emotional Capital Worth?
(Excerpt from The NEW Game of Business™ Chapter 1, NEW World)
I was homeless, carless and boatless.
I had no Plan B.
In the NEW World life doesn’t always go as planned. To win the new game we must get adept at adaptability, bounce back ability and response-ability. How we respond is more important that what happens to us. This is true in business as it is in life.
“It’s not how far you fall, it’s how high you bounce that counts” are words of wisdom that come in handy in times like these.
You want to have capital built in your emotional, social and psychic accounts. It’s valuable beyond measure to have family, friends and associates who can help and support you in times of need. In the NEW World your emotional, social, and psychic accounts can be more valuable than your savings, investments and financial assets.
Friends and loved ones who open their homes, invite you in and make you feel like family share intrinsic value that cannot be measured. You can’t put a dollar value on a soft landing after an aborted mission.
The NEW World is a World of Interdependence
You cannot go it alone. Your team is as or more important than your talent. You can have great skills and abilities, yet if you don’t surround yourself with a supporting cast of players who make you better and bring out your best, your talent will not shine as brightly as it could.
It’s good to have a pile of money. Sometimes it’s better to have a few good friends. In chapter 6, NEW Economics we’ll talk more about the importance of building your emotional, social and psychic capital accounts. These “ESP” accounts are critical assets of the new game.
I didn’t have a big pile of money. I did have equity in my emotional, social and psychic accounts. I used my ESP capital to navigate my move from New Jersey to San Diego.
Best Made Plans
In the old game you could plan and execute a plan according to plan. In the new game, the plan is obsolete the minute it jumps off the drawing board. Adaptability, flexibility and response-ability are essential “Success-abilities” that help you navigate the uncharted waters of the new game of business.
If not for my friends, I probably would have packed up my four suitcases and gone back east. Relationships and networks are as important and valuable as money in the new game of business. They are intangible assets that can produce tangible returns. It’s good to know how to live off your ESP capital when your cash flow is slow.
How much is your emotional capital worth?
Take stock today.
You just may have a golden asset waiting to be cashed in.
Get in the game today.

Do Soul Setting and Role Setting Before Goal Setting Comments Off on Do Soul Setting and Role Setting Before Goal Setting
Welcome to 2011!
Stress costs businesses $300 million every year.
These three deadly silent killers are not counted in the $300 million:
Soul frustration – “I’m not being or expressing who I really am.”
Role frustration – “I’m not doing what I value, or I’m not valuing what I do.”
Goal frustration – “I’m not where I think I should or ought to be.”
You won’t see these frustrations listed anywhere in a medical journal, a health periodical or a physician’s desk reference. You probably have not heard of them. Yet, it’s likely you are afflicted with one or more of these.
Frustration is a raging epidemic that eats away at us from the inside out.
Do you have soul, role or goal frustration?
Most of us have at least one frustration.
Many of us have two.
Some of us have all three.
Your high performance mind, body and spirit are compromised by soul, role and goal frustration. You cannot be your best, do your best, or get the best if you are afflicted with one or more of these frustrations.
How do you eliminate SOUL, ROLE and GOAL frustration?
First you recognize it.
You make the unconscious conscious.
You become aware of SOUL, ROLE and GOAL frustration.
Second you acknowledge it.
You identify which one or more frustrations you have.
You measure your stress, subjectively and/or objectively.
[Our Value Profile measures STRESS with precision in 15 minutes.
See INVITATION here ]
Third you remedy it.
You shift attention and reorder your value hierarchy.
You find better balance where you are tilting to the extreme.
You improve clarity in all three dimensions of SOUL, ROLE and GOAL.
You do your soul setting and role setting before you do your goal setting.
Recognition is simple.
Remedy is not.
It requires you to embrace a new value model that elevates soul and role above goal.
You transcend unconscious incompetence:
I don’t know what it is and I don’t know that I have it.
You move to conscious incompetence:
I know what it is and that I have it but I don’t know what to do about it.
You become consciously competent:
I know what I have and how to remedy it.
Our existing model of success contributes to these frustrations.
It puts:
Goal first – GO… the farther the better.
Role next – DO… whatever it takes to get goal.
Soul last – BE… if any time left over after going and doing.
The old game of success is based on a GOAL, ROLE, SOUL value model.
It elevates GOAL, the lowest value, above and ahead of ROLE and SOUL, the higher values.
Our fundamental model of success is upside down.
We put GOAL ACHIEVEMENT above ROLE SATISFACTION and SOUL FULFILLMENT.
Here’s an old game success mantra:
“Successful people do what unsuccessful won’t do.”
This mantra places accomplishment and achievement as the highest values, even if the price you pay is to do what you despise. It equates success with doing “whatever it takes” to achieve the goal.
This doubles the stress. It creates:
Goal frustration- you are not yet where you “think you ought” to be.
Role frustration- you are not doing what you like, what you are good at, what you know in your heart calls you, because you “have to do what you have to do” to accomplish the goal.
If you also have soul frustration, you feel like no matter how hard you work, how much you do or how far you go, you are simply “not good enough” yet.
YOU are your biggest critic.
You subordinate your soul and relinquish your role to achieve your goal.
GOAL is a zero-sum game:
It’s goal or no goal, success or failure.
The notion we should “do whatever it takes” to get GOAL, even at the expense of enjoying ROLE and nurturing SOUL is old game thinking.
To “sell your soul” and “sacrifice your role” just to “reach a goal” goes against your nature. It causes killer stress that moves your body into a state of tense dis-ease.
When you subordinate your soul and role to a goal, you invert the natural hierarchy of value.
This value collision creates frustration and stress that disease the mind, body and spirit.
Is it really success if you spend your precious moments of life ignoring your natural talent to put time and attention into attaining a goal you think is valuable?
Is it a winning trade off to sacrifice what you want to do, like to do or love to do (ROLE) to seek a “concept” of some future payoff (GOAL)?
We spend so much time in future GOAL that we have trouble BEING and DOING in the present.
Being is life.
Doing happens now.
Going is somewhere in the future.
We invert the true value of life when we give up the present for the future.
When we trade SOUL and ROLE for GOAL, we exchange the higher here and now for the lower someday maybe. If that someday maybe doesn’t come, we have given up the REAL NOW for an imagined later.
Unwittingly, unknowingly, unintentionally (or not), too many self-help motivators and personal development mantras fuel soul, role and goal frustration. They perpetuate the success model of goal above role and soul.
A NEW Value Hierarchy…
The Remedy for Soul, Role and Goal Frustration
Millions of people who built their success on the sand of GOAL instead of the bedrock of SOUL and ROLE are now suffering. They embraced getting, going and having as the formula for success.
What happens when the getting, going and having stop?
What happens to your SOUL (self worth) and your ROLE (self-confidence) when your GOAL (net worth) is wiped out?
SOUL is who you are, the immeasurable intrinsic value of your life.
ROLE is what you do, the expression of your talent in a livelihood.
GOAL is where you go, the journey toward a better lifestyle.
Life. Livelihood. Lifestyle.
SOUL. ROLE. GOAL.
You can continue to value GOAL (lifestyle) above ROLE (livelihood) and SOUL (life), or you can choose to shift your attention to the higher values of life.
To better adapt, be more adept.
This New Year, play a NEW Game.
First, set your SOUL.
Be who you are.
Express yourself. Don’t hold back.
Love yourself regardless of what you do or how far you go.
Next, set your ROLE.
Do what you like and what you’re good at.
Play roles that resonate with you, that bring the best YOU to the game.
Enjoy roles you like even if you don’t make money at them.
Then, set your GOAL.
Go where you want.
Find your True North.
Whether or not you get there, enjoy the journey.
Play for the love of the game.
Pay attention to SOUL.
Put more value on ROLE.
Set your GOAL in the context of SOUL and ROLE.
Whether or not you get GOAL, enrich your SOUL and enliven your ROLE.
SOUL.
ROLE.
GOAL.
Play the NEW Game of Success.
Happy New Year!
Fill it with plenty of plenty of what matters most.
You’re a player.
